Friday, April 29th, 2011Home Insurance: Do you usually have to inform the Insurance company if you have just had a child?
I’ve had home insurance since before my boy was born, he is 1yo now. I was just thinking that since you are much more likely to have accidents and breakages with children running around the house that insurance companies would want to be informed (so they can put your premiums up). I can’t find the papers anywhere so please don’t bother saying ”oh, read the small print damn it”

When you take out a home policy these days, lots of quote systems ask how many adults and how many children live in the home. This is only a tiny part of your risk assessment and would only affect your premium very minimally if at all. If you then change the number of adults or number of children, you should advise them when your policy is due for renewal.
If you cannot find your proposal form/statement of fact, contact whoever you took the policy out with and ask them if they require this information, as you would not wish to have a claim denied because it had not been disclosed. If you are absolutely sure you were not asked for this information when you took the policy out, then if they did not need to know then, they don’t need to know now.
